Gravity Feed Spray Gun Upside Down
-
Shoot straight up with hvlp? Sorry if this has been answered but the search function is not working for me.
I am doing a Jag whose body wraps underneath and I will need to paint straight up to do the bottom. I use a Sharpe HVLP with a top cup. The angle of the cup looks like I'll be sucking air soon even with a full cup. Should I use a bottom cup suction gun for the bottom and swap out guns for the rest? Thanks

Go to the store section of this site and look At Paint Shop tools. Under the Spraying section you will find DeVilbiss. Look in that area and find The DeKups. You will need an adapter, Frame and Lid kit and a liner kit of 32 liners. With that installed instead of your normal cup you will be able to shoot in any direction because the paint is in a collapsible cup that shrinks as the paint is used up.
I use Devilbiss guns and they have a bag option that lets you use the original cup with a plastic bag sealed into the cup base. Very good when I need to spray overhead or at an angle. I never have to worry about getting air sucked into the tip.

You can use the bag system with any gun,
Devilbiss sells a kit with adaptors.
You can also use Zip-Lock Freezer 1qt bags
with it, that's what I've been useing for
a few years now, for all my guns.
Wouldn't spray without it.

Either the Cup Liners or the DeKups work well for spraying at extreme angles. Both of these products allow you to hold a gravity feed gun upside down and spray if you want.

I had posted a similar problem regarding spraying lower rocker panels. My De Vilbiss is equipped with the DeKups system and the liner collapses as it should. When held at a sharp angle, let alone upside down, the paint stops flowing. I had assumed, as it was a gravity feed system, without gravity the paint flow would stop and have tried hard to keep the gun at no more than a slight angle. What am I doing wrong?? Any info appreciated.

If there is any air in the cup the paint will stop for as long as it takes the gun to suck the air out of the cup. That should take one or two seconds with the gun held upside down. After all the air is gone it should work the same no mater how it is held. When I am using a bag I invert the gun first thing and get rid of the air in the bag. That way I dont get a shot of air in the middle of something.
If that is not the case and your gun only works in the upright position then there is something wrong and it is most likely a leaking tip seal. The ventury action in the tip/air cap assembly causes a vacuum that sucks the paint passed the needle into the air stream for atomization. If the tip seal is leaking then the vacuum is compromised, and your gun may soon start fluttering the paint pattern.

After loading the DeKup and attaching it to the gun turn the gun completely over (DeKup facing the floor) and pull the trigger until you have the bag collapse and material start to shoot out of the gun. You must collapse the bag.

Is there a setup like this available for mini-guns like the Sata MiniJet?
-
Yes, the DeKup system can be used with any gun that has the DeKup adapter. The Sata Mini Jet is at the bottom of the list shown on the link below.
